What is a Democrat?
Many have written about what being a Democrat means. Some provide literal interpretations, others are brutal and pejorative and the remaining are theoretical and academic. Below is my personal interpretation of what being a Democrat means. The order is not of importance as all points are weighted equally.
1) Shoulder Responsibility: We do not tepidly shy away from issues. We attack problems head-on; without fear or concern of potential political repercussions. We accept that governing is difficult and that it is a privilege and an honor, not an expected right or entitlement. We acknowledge that America is confronted with big problems and that it will take big ideas and people of big character to solve them.
2) Nurture: We believe that this world is a gift and that it is incumbent upon us to leave it better for future generations. We also believe that growth and development of children does, in fact, take a village and not just one sole isolated person. We demonstrate compassion and empathy and believe that education is a social need that must be made available to each citizen.
3) Provide Protection: We vow to fight on behalf of the worker, the environment and the consumer. Moreover, it is a further responsibility that we protect this wonderful country by proportional means when deemed necessary and proper.
4) Promote Fairness and Equity: We treat people with dignity and respect. We do not judge and we do not exclude, ever. We accept, with open arms, people of all walks without inspection or question.
5) Seek Fulfillment: We encourage everyone to live a fulfilled life without fear of retribution or obstruction. We do not demean those who live differently than ourselves.
6) Ensure Freedom: The protection of rights – guaranteed overtly or throughout historical interpretation – by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is of critical importance and must never be superseded by any other purpose or intention.
7) Provide Opportunity: All, regardless of circumstance or standing, are entitled to the same rights, privileges and opportunities. We recognize, however, that the means made available is different for everyone, and because of that, it is our responsibility to try and bring equal opportunity to each and every person.
8) Promote General Prosperity: Each person is entitled to adequately provide for him/herself and his/her family. It is our desire to ensure that each person is fairly compensated and that increased wealth among the middle class benefits every aspect of society.
9) Sense of Community: Our neighbor(s) is/are extended family. We have a responsibility to help and support them and expect that they return same in-kind. Should they feel otherwise, it is our responsibility to demonstrate by understanding means the importance of our particular relationship relative to the development and growth of our community.
10) Being Cooperative, Trustworthy and Open: We believe in cooperation among all people, trust is the foundation upon which all relationships are founded, and that open, honest and forthright governance is the backbone of Democracy.
