GMYD President Sees Task Force Through

December 17, 2007

Geoff Luxenberg, President of the GMYD’s and former Board of Education member, has seen his proposal for an achievement gap task force, a foundational pillar of his campaign for reelection, through to creation.

The proposal passed 6-2, with Republican members Steve Edwards and Mike Crockett voting “nay”.  Interestingly, Crockett then agreed to co-chair the task force, officially referred to as the Best Practices Committee of the Improvement District Committee, with Democrat Mike Pohl.  UPDATE:  Mike Crockett will no longer serve as the Republican co-chair; Jay Moran, who regularly railed against this process during the campaign, will serve instead.

Democratic board member Michael E. Pohl said the school system has done a lot to address the gap, but “we won’t be done with this until there isn’t an achievement gap.”

The school board “has an obligation to those students to make sure we’re doing everything we can to make sure they succeed,” Pohl said.

Democrat Dr. Bethany Silver and Republican Mary Jane Dodge Pazda have been selected as the school board’s other two representatives on the committee.  Pohl has indicated that the subcommittee can have up to 12 members and expects to have several Board of Directors members participate as well.
